Europe took it up as the Wall came down: Berlin made it the sound of reunification, and its clubs still run unbroken nights on it. A steady 4/4 kick, little or no vocal, tension built by layers added and pulled away rather than by a chorus.

A techno night doesn't work like a gig: there is no song to recognise and no scheduled moment to applaud. The DJ runs records together without a break and the tension is built over hours, which is why the clubs that programme it often stay open into the next day, and why the scene counts set hours rather than tracks played.

Two formats coexist in Europe. The club first: Berlin turned it into an institution with Klubnächte running from Saturday night to Monday morning, but Amsterdam, London, Paris, Prague and Tbilisi hold their own. Then the open air, April to September, from Dutch fields to Italian industrial wasteland, techno now fills festivals of several tens of thousands.

NTO, real name Anthony Favier, born in 1985 in Marseille, is a French melodic techno producer and composer. He released his first EP, Traque, on Basilic Records in 2008 under the name N'to, then co-founded the Hungry Music collective and label with Worakls and Joachim Pastor in 2013. He left Hungry Music in 2020 and released the album Apnea on AllPoints in 2021, followed by Forever Friends with pianist Sofiane Pamart in 2024.

Autechre are an English electronic duo formed in 1987 in Rochdale, near Manchester, by Rob Brown and Sean Booth. All their albums have appeared on Warp Records, starting with Incunabula in 1993, after their appearance on the 1992 compilation Artificial Intelligence. Starting from melodic techno shaped by 1980s electro and hip-hop, they moved towards abstract compositions often filed under IDM.

Joachim Pastor is a French DJ and producer from Paris, part of the melodic techno scene. He co-founded the Hungry Music label and collective with Worakls and NTO in 2013, then joined Armada Music in 2020 to release his first album, Greater Message. His music, built on orchestral and cinematic harmonies, continued with the album PHANTOMGRID in 2025 and the score for the documentary The Final Season.

Joris Delacroix, born in 1987 in Montpellier, is a French musician, producer and DJ. Trained on piano from the age of four, he discovered electronic music at sixteen and released his first EP on Timid Records in 2008. Later signed to Way of House, he released the album Room With View in 2011, followed by Going Back in 2016 and Night Visions in 2018; his output sits in house, deep house and melodic techno.
