Out of British jungle and breakbeat hardcore, drum & bass rests on a split: the drum breaks run at 174 BPM while the bassline plays at half that speed. Hence the feeling of being fast and heavy at once. The breakbeat that started it all, the "Amen break", is a six-second sample lifted from a 1969 soul record.

It is the one major electronic family born British and still British. From sound-system culture it kept the MC, who talks over the set, works the room and sits on the bill as much as the DJ, a night billed "DJ + MC" is not a programming accident.

Its branches run from melodic liquid to the darkest neurofunk, and its crowd is among the youngest in the scene. Long lived mostly in clubs, it is now a heavy presence at festivals, in the UK and on the continent alike.

Andy C is the stage name of Andrew Michael Clarke, an English DJ and record producer born in 1976 in Walsall. He co-founded the drum and bass label RAM Records. His first success came in 1993 with "Valley of the Shadows", released as Origin Unknown, his duo with Ant Miles; in 2001 "Body Rock", with Shimon, reached number 28 on the UK Singles Chart. RAM has since signed Chase & Status, Loadstar, Sub Focus and Wilkinson.

Hybrid Minds are a British drum and bass duo made up of Josh White and Matt Lowe, active since the early 2010s. They work the liquid end of the genre: rolling basslines, atmospheric pads and guest vocals, with recurring collaborations with singers Charlotte Haining and Alexa Harley. Their debut album "Mountains" came out in 2013. They release most of their music on their own label, Hybrid Music.
