The story

The first edition took place in 1993 under the name Diáksziget, "Student Island": after public funding for summer festivals dried up following 1989, rock fans organised it in their spare time, among them Károly Gerendai and Péter Sziámi Müller. It drew 43,000 people, with Hungarian acts only, and ran so far over budget that the losses were not repaid until 1997. The following year's "Eurowoodstock" edition invited musicians from the original Woodstock.

The festival grew on the same Óbuda Island, 108 hectares of trees in northern Budapest: more than 250,000 visitors by 1997, 365,000 in 2001, called Pepsi Sziget from 1996 to 2001 and Sziget Fesztivál since. In 2008 it switched to five days plus two opening days to spare the neighbours. The record fell in 2018 with 565,000 visitors over the week; after two COVID-19 cancellations in 2020 and 2021, it returned with 452,000 people in 2022.

Sziget calls itself "the Island of Freedom": more than 100 nationalities in the crowd according to the organisers, and much more than music, with contemporary circus, theatre, dance and workshops. Since 2025 the site has been split into districts, including the Delta District that gathers the electronic stages. The company's story has been bumpier: a US fund took control in 2017, then, after a HUF 2.8 billion loss in 2025, founder Károly Gerendai bought the company back from Superstruct Entertainment in November 2025.

In 2026 the first edition under the new management ran from 11 to 15 August, preceded by two Hungarian days, and drew around 350,000 to 360,000 visitors according to its founder, 53% of them Hungarian. The festival twice won Best Major European Festival at the European Festival Awards, in 2011 and 2014, and the organisers say they welcomed their 11 millionth festivalgoer in 2025.

The music

Sziget is not an electronic festival: the Main Stage belongs to pop and rock (Florence + The Machine, Bring Me The Horizon, Twenty One Pilots in 2026), the Budapest Park Stage to the Hungarian scene, and the island also books hip-hop, metal, jazz and world music. Electronic music has had its own district since 2025, the Delta District: techno, hard techno and drum & bass at the BOLT Night Stage, house and techno at the Yettel Colosseum, a late-night club for Hungarian DJs, bass music at night at VISA Live x DropYard, and sets until morning on the Revolut Stage.

In 2026 the Delta District brought together around a hundred acts, including Peggy Gou, Richie Hawtin, Dixon, Joris Voorn, Sara Landry and Indira Paganotto; Faithless played the Main Stage on 10 August and Skrillex closed it on the 15th. Electronic music goes back a long way here: Armin van Buuren, Eric Prydz and Pete Tong at the Party Arena in 2009, Deadmau5, Skrillex and Calvin Harris on the Main Stage in 2014. The 2027 names have not been announced.
