For its 20th anniversary, Neopop takes back its original name, ANTIPOP, for one edition: more than 100 artists on three stages at Forte de Santiago da Barra, a bill in alphabetical order, and Laurent Garnier closing on Sunday morning.
Neopop Festival took place from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 August 2026 at Forte de Santiago da Barra, Viana do Castelo, Portugal, across 3 days. 27 names are on the bill, led by Jeff Mills. It is one of 24 Techno and House dates we list in Portugal over the coming months.

Three nights of techno on the harbour of Viana do Castelo, at the foot of Forte de Santiago da Barra: born in 2006 as Antipop, Neopop has become the great electronic gathering of northern Portugal without ever leaving its town.
The festival was born in 2006 in Viana do Castelo, a town of traditions an hour north of Porto, under a name that made its position clear: Antipop. "Precisely because it was a counterculture of music," says Raul Duro, who founded it with his friends Gustavo and Paulo. Resident Advisor links the name to the lack of underground electronic music in the Norte region, Clash to the dominance of commercial Europop in the early 2000s.
In 2009 the festival became Neopop: "the anti meant something more extreme that we wanted to step away from," Raul Duro explains. The tenth anniversary was celebrated in 2016. In 2018 Neopop ran over four days for the first time, opened by a free St Germain concert, with two stages, the Neo Stage framed by the harbour cranes and the Anti Stage set against the fort walls. After two years without a festival because of the pandemic, the 15th edition set its one-night record in 2022: close to 10,000 people on the Friday, with every day ticket sold.
The setting defines the place: a festival laid out between the fortress, the quays, the sheds and the shipyards, with lights and visuals by DubLab. Run by Made of You with the support of the municipality, it also spills into town, with Original Sessions at the Teatro Sá de Miranda and, in 2026, a free Richie Hawtin set on Praça da República. Raul Duro sums up its philosophy: new talent, established artists and legends of electronic music on the same bill.
In 2026, for its 20th anniversary, Neopop took back the Antipop name for a single edition: a bill in alphabetical order, the main stage moved to face the fort, a third stage named Back Stage as a jab at VIP culture, and an exhibition on two decades of the festival. The organisers reported about 32,000 festivalgoers from 6 to 8 August, and Laurent Garnier closed the edition on Sunday morning. The festival returns from 5 to 7 August 2027.

The covered stage, under a tent, bounded by shipping containers and set against the fort walls. It hosts the deeper, more experimental sets, often until morning.

A new stage in 2026, more intimate, focused on Portuguese and local artists. Its name mocks the rush for backstage access: "we created a stage to please everyone," says founder Raul Duro.

For the 2026 anniversary, a themed exhibition traced the festival's milestones, with lit panels lined up in front of the harbour sheds.

The official campsite, by the river beach, for full-pass holders who register in advance and linked to the site by free shuttles. In 2026 Héctor Oaks and FJAAK played there.

The festival spills into town: on Friday 7 August 2026, Richie Hawtin played for free on Viana's central square, to families, passers-by and festivalgoers. The day before the festival, the Original Sessions take place at the Teatro Sá de Miranda.
Techno dominates, from the cerebral to the heavy end, with house, electro and live sets. The Neo Stage takes the big names and the most awaited b2b sets; the Anti Stage holds the deeper, experimental register, from Dopplereffekt and Conforce live in 2018 to Mathew Jonson and Chlär in 2026; in 2026 the Back Stage gave room to the Portuguese scene.
Some names return as pillars: Jeff Mills and Dax J appear on the bills of 2018, 2022, 2025 and 2026, and Nina Kraviz, Richie Hawtin and Joseph Capriati also come back from one edition to the next. The 2026 anniversary edition bet on one-off pairings, Ben Klock b2b Rødhåd, Joseph Capriati b2b Luke Slater, Ben Sims b2b Chris Liebing, FJAAK x KiNK, and on Portuguese talent such as Lewis Fautzi, Rui Vargas and Jiggy b2b The Advent. The 2027 line-up has not been announced yet.
