The story

The first edition took place on Sunday 14 August 2005 in Boom, over a single day, in front of some ten thousand people who came for Sven Väth, Sasha, Armin van Buuren, Erol Alkan and Justice. Behind it were brothers Manu and Michiel Beers, partnered with ID&T until 2013; they then bought out its share, and the festival is now run by their company, WEAREONE.world.

Growth was fast: two days from 2007, a first sell-out in 2009, 180,000 tickets gone in under a day in 2011, then two weekends from 2014, for the tenth anniversary. Cancelled in 2020 and 2021 and replaced by digital editions, the festival returned in 2022 over three weekends and more than 600,000 people, before settling back into two weekends and some 400,000 festivalgoers.

Every edition has its theme, and the Mainstage is its set: "LIFE" for the twentieth anniversary in 2024, "Orbyz" in 2025, "Consciencia" in 2026, with six monumental heads on a structure 43 metres high and 140 wide. In 2025 that Mainstage burned almost entirely on the Wednesday evening before opening, with no casualties; a replacement stage about a third of the original's size went up in under 48 hours, and the festival opened on time.

The crowd comes from more than 200 countries, and the festival was voted number one in DJ Mag's festival poll for the sixth year running in 2026. The brand has spread elsewhere, Tomorrowland Winter in Alpe d'Huez every March since 2019, Tomorrowland Brasil, then Tomorrowland Thailand in December 2026, but Boom remains the original. In 2023 an agreement with the province of Antwerp and the local councils secured De Schorre for the festival for another 66 years.

The set changes every year with the theme: six monumental heads, fountains and waterfalls for "Consciencia" in 2026. It is where the fireworks go off and the closing sets happen, Martin Garrix in 2026.

More than 500 artists play over an edition. In 2026 Calvin Harris played Boom's Mainstage for the first time, and Martin Garrix closed the festival on Sunday 26 July. The 2027 names have not been announced.
