Location

Born from 200-capacity parties, Dekmantel brought its festival under the willows of the Amsterdamse Bos in 2013, where each stage holds its own sonic world, from techno at UFO to the long sets of Selectors.

The story

The story begins with a group of friends from The Hague who moved to Amsterdam. In 2007 Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij launched the Dekmantel parties, with an eye on Detroit: the first, with San Proper, took place in a 200-capacity club, and the venues grew to 400, 600 and then 1,500 people for the third birthday. The label followed in 2009, with an EP and then an album by Juju & Jordash.

The first festival took place on 23 to 25 August 2013 in the Amsterdamse Bos, the large wooded park south of the city, with 5,000 tickets a day and Four Tet, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance and Laurent Garnier on the bill. The DJ-focused Selectors stage arrived in 2014; by 2015 capacity had reached 10,000 tickets, with an opening concert at the Muziekgebouw and nights at the Melkweg. The brand then went to Tisno, Croatia, with Dekmantel Selectors (2016), and to São Paulo (2017). The 2020 edition was postponed, and so was 2021, after outdoor events were banned; the festival returned on 3 to 7 August 2022.

Dekmantel does not build its editions around a theme: its stages carry the identity, each with its own community. Techno at UFO, bass at The Nest, eclectic sets at Selectors, concerts and listening at the Greenhouse, streaming at RADAR, headliners in the circular arena of The Loop. Sound is a subject in itself: Funktion-One, Krackfree at The Nest, Floating Points' Sunflower Sound System at the Greenhouse in 2025. The festival describes itself as independent, serves an all-vegetarian menu and asks its audience to put phones away on the dance floor.

In 2024 Dekmantel Ten celebrated the tenth edition over ten days, from Het HEM in Zaandam to the forest, with The Loop redesigned as a 360-degree circle. In 2026 the twelfth edition, from 29 July to 2 August, added At Dawn, mornings reserved for weekend ticket holders, and Into the City, at the Melkweg and Paradiso; the organisers reported more than 200 acts, seven stages in the forest and 18,000 visitors, and every weekend ticket was gone before the festival. The official site announces a return to the Amsterdamse Bos in 2027, with no dates published so far.

The Loop

The main stage, redesigned in 2024 as a 360-degree circular arena, where part of the crowd dances on the gallery overlooking the floor. In 2026 Octo Octa and Eris Drew played a two-hour, all-vinyl set there.

Selectors

The stage for long DJ sets, born in 2014, under the willows. Since 2025 a 12-metre-high canopy designed with Studio Zelt keeps the forest in view, because the team considers this spot the most beautiful on the site.

Greenhouse

The glasshouse for concerts and listening sets. In 2025 Floating Points installed his Sunflower Sound System there; in 2026 it moved under a wooden dome with the ON2 system by NNNN and OJAS, and cushions for the mornings.

UFO I et UFO II

The two techno stages. UFO I, a hangar, received a new d&b system in 2025; the darker UFO II keeps the site's most experimental reputation. In 2025 ROD and Sterac closed Saturday at UFO I.

The Nest

The bass stage, under a scaffolding roof aligned with the path of the sun, with a Krackfree system. In 2026 Kode9 played there on four decks, and Mala and Sir Spyro closed Sunday.

RADAR

Dekmantel's streaming stage, in the open air, with the booth in the middle and scaffolding stands. In 2026 its grounds also hosted the At Dawn mornings, from 11:00 to 14:00, reserved for weekend ticket holders.

The music

Dekmantel covers the whole electronic spectrum and each stage holds part of it: techno at UFO, dubstep, jungle and bass music at The Nest, sets that ignore genre boundaries at Selectors, live music and ambient at the Greenhouse, techno, electro and drum and bass at RADAR. The programmers talk about established "sonic worlds" that they sharpen every year. Since 2026 the night programme extends them into the city: Garage Noord for The Nest, RADION for UFO, ISO for Selectors.

The programme mixes pioneers and the next generation, with room for Dutch artists and the label's own. In 2026: Underground Resistance with Saul Williams, Ricardo Villalobos, LSD Live, Skrillex making his festival debut, Actress with Carl Craig, Jeff Mills in the morning, and Dekmantel label projects premiered on site by Makam, Shed and CCL. The 2027 artists have not been announced yet.
